An Overview of Modeling Systems for Mathematical Programming
(Invited Minisymposium)
Successful software for mathematical programming must provide fast and
reliable algorithms, but good algorithms are only a beginning. Practitioners today expect advanced modeling systems that incorporate powerful languages for expressing optimization problems and convenient options for analyzing optimal solutions. The speakers in this minisymposium will discuss three different approaches to the design of modeling languages and systems for mathematical programming. The presentations are of direct interest to conference participants who develop optimization models, whether linear or nonlinear, continuous or discrete. They are also of interest to algorithm developers, because different modeling system designs tend to require substantially different collections of optimization methods.
