Active Thin Films (Part I of II)

Active Thin Films are thin layers of of active material that change shape or morphology when subjected to a temperature change or an electromagnetic field. The minisymposium on active thin films explores recent developments in this area in an interdisciplinary setting. The speakers include a mixture of scientists making and studying active films of shape-memory, magnetostrictive and related materials together with mathematicians developing mathematical models of the behavior of thin films. The goal is to review the state-of-the-art in active thin film synthesis, to highlight recent predictions of the behavior of thin films, and, most importantly, to formulate open questions and problems relevant to thin active films.
