Singularly perturbed variational problems occur in many areas of mechanics. In the mechanics of membranes the singular perturbation is bending energy; in the study of faceted interfaces it is edge energy; in the analysis of phase transformations it is surface energy; in some problems of micromagnetics it is Bloch wall energy. In some settings the unperturbed problem has many classical solutions and the singular perturbation provides a selection mechanism. In other settings, the unperturbed problem prefers microstructure and the singular perturbation chooses its pattern and length scale. This minisymposium will focus on current progress on selected problems of both types.
