This minisymposium focuses on size effects in materials and structures. Such effects are present because physical processes that govern deformation and fracture behavior at one scale may not be important at another scale. Size effects are of critical importance in many applications that involve predictions for very large (ice fields) or very small (microelectronics components)structures that are based on experimental data obtained from conventional laboratory specimens. The speakers in this minisymposium will present recent computational, experimental, and theoretical work and will discuss ideas explored by engineers, mathematicians, and physicists.
