Equations for simulating many displacement processes in porous media are nonlinear partial differential equations. Several of the properties within the equations, such as relative permeabilities and capillary pressure for multiphase flow, are functions of one or more state (or dependent) variables. These properties are not measured directly, but may be estimated indirectly from measurements in the laboratory or field. This estimation problem poses a number of challenges, including selection of functional representations, solution of associated optimization problems, and selection of experimental designs for accurate estimates. The speakers in this minisymposium will present their recent work about estimating nonlinear properties from laboratory experiments.
