Over the past 20 years, finite element codes have evolved into robust, accurate, and economical tools for modeling three-dimensional coastal hydrodynamics and transport. Thus, the potential for using highly graded grids to address the range of scales contained in these flows is now being realized. The speaker will discuss some of the advancements in model formulation and implementation that have allowed us to reach the present state and also indicate some of the remaining challenges that we face. He will also summarize some of the more interesting modeling applications that he has been involved with using the ADCIRC finite element model.
