The goal of this workshop is to familiarize the audience with the process by which CAGD is integrated into a particular client environment. Understanding the particular environment of each of the four highlighted client applications will enable those in academe to be better prepared for applying their research to problems in industry. Those interested in applying CAGD techniques in emerging areas will be able to use these four prototypes as models. One of the speakers, having made a recent career transition, will discuss the initial steps in introducing CAGD and 3D techniques to GPS, Global Positioning System.
The speakers will discuss: historical background, when and how CAGD was first used; the user interface and user control; examples of a critical need and how CAGD fulfilled it or is working on it; changes in the direction of development, for example visualization has become a vital part of the CAD/CAM offering; systematic problems peculiar to the industry that pose challenges, such as navigating large databases; and finally, what are the open questions.
