Spatio-temporal systems present the researcher with gigabytes of data (often in video!) and more variables than can be accommodated by ordinary time series analysis techniques. Evidently chaotic behavior has been observed in the spatio-temporal dynamics of flame fronts, reaction-diffusion systems, and thermal convection cells, to name just a few. This minisymposium will ask: What can one infer (and what would one like to infer) about spatio-temporal chaos by analyzing this deluge of data? It is the organizer's bias that a particular, intensive quantity, the dimension per unit volume, can provide one answer to these questions. It is hoped that this bias will be more critically examined and that hints will emerge for the more difficult question: How can one infer ...?
